NOT A HAPPY CAMPER

Image may contain: dog and indoor
"Lemme outa here!"

Duke is feeling better, but can't walk yet, of course. We got a small playpen to keep him in (Graco "Pack and Play") per the UGA vet's orders. We take him out to do his business (but we carry him outside and set him down carefully, then pick him up and carry him back inside). He has maybe 25% function in his back legs now, and he does stand some.

We are to move his back legs, stretching them to engage the hips and then push them back slowly, to keep his joints flexible. Today is terrible weather in Georgia (hail, thunderstorms, heavy rain, tornado watches, etc.), so it's not a good day to help him walk a few feet with a sling on his back. Oh, we could do it inside, but he just isn't cooperating with that just yet.

He is eating and drinking, and doesn't seem to hurt, even with pressure on his incision--he doesn't mind lying on his side at all. Those staples, and I can attest to after two knee replacements, aren't all that comfy!

I have to admit that I am afraid for his back in the future. I'll never be comfortable that it won't happen to him again, and I will be a helicopter doxie parent from now on. I pray he'll recover enough to be happy, healthy, and mobile, but we were cautioned that he might not be 100%. That's something we can live with, and we'll do our part to help him achieve his maximum.

He's not a puppy anymore, but he sometimes forgot that himself. He's a playful, happy, and sweet doxie--I want him to be so again.

Dachshunds . . . you can't help but love them.

EDITING/FORMATTING: A DACHSHUND'S TRIBUTE

I will not be posting very often for the next few weeks as I work on getting Book 4, A DACHSHUND'S TRIBUTE of THE DACHSHUND ESCAPADES edited/formatted.  Since this book is a tad short, I'm adding several chapters as well.

I have a confession:  Book 3, DACHSHUNDS FOREVER, was supposed to be the final book of the series, but things kept coming to mind, and I kept writing and writing.  It grew too long, so I divided it.  Now, Book 4, what is left over from Book 3, is coming up short!  Oh, it's long enough to sell, but I'd like it to be a little longer so it seems like a book rather than a booklet.

I do plan to get the Kindle version out before Christmas, but no promises on the paperback version, since there is a whole different set of formatting issues for the paperback version.  We'll see.

Until I return, here are a few cute doxie photos to tide you over:

TA DA: DACHSHUNDS FOREVER--TO RELEASE SOON!

I'm excited to announce that the long-awaited Book 3, DACHSHUNDS FOREVER, will be released in a matter of weeks.

The cover is still in the tweaking stage, but it does it catch one's eye.

The featured doxies are my own granddawg Shadow (upon whom the doxie "author" Sarge is based), and my beloved doxie Duke.  Handsome, aren't they?

The smaller photos on the cover represent an adventurous trip out West that these two precocious guys took in a motor home (with some of their humans, of course).  You'll love reading about what and whom they encountered along the way, written in Sarge's own entertaining doxie style.

Book 4, A DACHSHUND'S TRIBUTE, will follow closely behind this book's release.  Therefore, you might be able to get both on Amazon before Christmas!

**Stay tuned for updates**

If you haven't yet read the first two books of the series, go ahead and get your copies now by clicking on the BOOKS link at the top of this blog--you'll then be ready for DACHSHUNDS FOREVER when it comes out.

Dachshunds . . . you gotta love 'em.

BEING CATTY TODAY

These are the cats in our family, besides our two dachshunds, Shadow and Duke.  Since our doxies must deal and interact with these felines, I felt it was fitting to write about them.

Tate, Joey, and Winston are the three cats owned by Bethany and Kurt, our daughter and son-in-law who live in Arizona.  Neither Shadow nor Duke has ever met these three, although Sarge the doxie writes about them in THE DACHSHUND ESCAPADES series, and his encounter with the Fuzz Brothers, also known as Tate ("Fuzz Ball") and Joey ("Slick").

Winston, the baby in his cat family

Piper, Aslan, and Winston live in Shadow's family with the three grandchildren, and at age 13, he is affectionately known as the big brother by all family members.

Piper and Aslan
Thor, the newest and youngest kitty, doesn't quite no what to make of Duke when we visit them.  All Duke wants to do is to play with Thor, like he did with Piper when they were both youngsters.  However, with Duke's loud bark, Thor keeps his distance, although he does swipe at Duke's nose when Duke gets too close to him.  One of these days, Thor's claws will connect with Duke's nose, and our dawg will gain considerable intelligence about felines.

I don't believe that Thor is afraid of Duke at all--that is one kitten who is afraid of nothing--but Duke's loud bark deafens Thor momentarily, and he does not like it.

Dachshunds, kitties, whatever--we all love our pets and enjoy them so much!

HAPPY DOXIE BIRTHDAY TO DUKE!

Yes, our beloved doxie Duke is seven years old today.  These years with him have been a roller coaster ride of laughs, fun, love, and joy.  He came to us as a scared little eight-week-old puppy, but
that didn't last long.  In a few days, he felt right at home and his antics have given us many laughs.

Super Dawg
I had told my hubby:  "I want a dog with personality," and boy, did we get it!  Yes, he's a tad stubborn, but that's a noted doxie trait.  If we tell him to get up on the couch and lie down, he makes a beeline for the blue chair across the room in front of a window!  But he does lie down in the blue chair, so I suppose that's obedience--well, partial obedience, anyway.

He loves tug-of-war, too.  For only an eighteen-pound dawg, he's very strong, so the game exercises any human arm that plays it with him.

"What?  I thought you said TREAT"
After my recent surgeries, he made it his priority to stay by my side and take care of me.  I had trouble getting up from my recliner when I first came home from the hospital, so Clark would take my hands and pull me up.  Of course, my knee hurt, so I probably groaned and had a pained expression.  Duke promptly got between Clark and me, whining and barking at him--Duke thought Clark was hurting me, when it was only the process of getting up that hurt me.  We reassured him that I was okay, so he's never intervened again when Clark has helped me up.

His vocabulary is large, too.  By "vocabulary" I mean the words that he understands:  food, hungry, eat, breakfast, lunch, dinner, cheese, eggs and bacon, treat, toy,
ball, bone, squeak toy, sock, lie down, bath, go out, car, ride, mailman, cat, kitty, squirrel, geese, Mama, Daddy, and all the names of everyone else in the family, especially those of the grandchildren.  Notice a pattern of all the food-related words?

Of course, as most dogs do, he is overjoyed when we come home from anywhere.  Lately, it's been to my physical therapy sessions, which last about two hours.  Clark drives me because my recent knee replacement was on my right leg--not up to driving yet.  Duke wags his tail and smiles, giving us doggie kisses and being thrilled to see us.

He made his debut in THE DACHSHUND ESCAPADES series in Book 2, I AM DACHSHUND.  Sarge takes Duke under his wing (or paw, to be exact) to teach Duke how dachshunds should act, as well as some of his own time-tested methods for obtaining human food.

All in all, I can't imagine how boring our lives were before he came.  Our children were married and lived out of town (well, one of them is only an hour away now), so the house was very quiet.  Duke has livened it up considerably, still wanting to chase his ball after we throw it down the hall for him.
"Why should I get off your bed??"

In fact, we've talked about his remarkable talent for remaining puppy-like in middle age (in dog years, that is).  He has a gray hair here and there now, too.  But his fun-loving and comical personality from puppyhood is still intact.  He makes us laugh every day, and he gives us that unconditional love that only a dog can give--down here, anyway.

Dachshunds . . . you gotta love 'em.  And in our case, we love Duke for the handsome, sweet, stubborn, intelligent, comical, loyal, and yes--the downright human--dawg he is!

HAPPY FATHER'S DAY TO THE TWO BEST MEN!

And those two would be my husband Clark and my late father, known as "Papa Duke" in THE DACHSHUND ESCAPADES series.  Both were/are awesome grandpas, too!

Here's wishing all dads and grandfathers a happy Father's Day, too!  May your day be wonderful and blessed, surrounded by loved ones.

I AM DACHSHUND

Book 2 of THE DACHSHUND ESCAPADES series, I AM DACHSHUND is listed for $15.26 (paperback) and $4.99 (Kindle) on Amazon today!  Click on the link below for further information:

http://www.amazon.com/Am-Dachshund-Mavis-Duke-Hinton/dp/1602902593/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1396969436&sr=1-1&keywords=i+am+dachshund

Sometimes a dog has to put up with a little silliness from humans.

"People have strange notions and do some of the craziest things, but I don't mind them. I get all the attention I want from Mama, Papa, who's a pastor, and my sweet little baby sister, Annika, who loves my kisses.

"But there's one thing lacking . . . people food. I love people food. After you've had it, that dried-up dog food tastes like cardboard. That's why I count on my absolute favorite person in the world, Papa, who calls me his "Granddawg," and his best friend, Sellars. They've been known to slip me the good stuff now and then, when Mama and Grandma aren't looking.

"Most dogs just lie around, passively accepting what comes their way, watching the world go by. That sounds suspiciously like a cat to me. I want the world to know I AM DACHSHUND--the guardian, the sentinel, the keeper of everything my family holds dear . . . ."

Fall in love with Sarge, the quintessential dachshund, and laugh along with his foibles and humorous escapades.

HAPPY 12TH BIRTHDAY TO SHADOW!

Today marks the 12th birthday of my granddawg, Shadow!  He is, of course the dachshund "author" of my series of books written from his viewpoint, THE DACHSHUND ESCAPADES.

I'm looking forward to my third book, DACHSHUNDS FOREVER, to be in publication soon.  Shadow (as Sarge in the books) relates more of his interesting tales about his zany family, notably Papa Duke, his favorite person in the entire world.

Join me in wishing Shadow a wonderful birthday today!
