MY WONDERFUL BIRTHDAY!

Yes, I recently had a birthday, despite the fact that I said I wouldn't have them anymore! Can't stop 'em, so ya might as well enjoy 'em, right? My family went all out: decorations, "Death by Chocolate" birthday cake made by our daughter Holly, a wonderful meal at our favorite Italian restaurant, and beautiful flowers from the whole family as well as my favorite red roses from Clark (yes, he's a keeper!).

Here are some photos of the occasion:

My delicious cake: yes, it was as
delicious as you think it was!

The only drawback to the occasion was the fact that Kurt and Bethany couldn't come from Arizona. But we will see them in a few weeks!

MERRY CHRISTMAS, doxie lovers! I'll be posting lots of cute doxie pics for you, so visit often.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, PAPA DUKE! (1914 - 2000)

Today marks the birthday of my late dad, known to readers as Papa Duke in THE DACHSHUND ESCAPADES books. He left us on October 21, 2000, and life hasn't been the same since!

We miss your robust laugh, your guitar music, your harmonica tunes, and funny stories that livened up every family gathering; we miss watching your big, muscular hands working in your beloved garden and preparing delicious food; and, we miss your generous heart that loved us all unconditionally. Despite your rough childhood, you loved life and you loved your family.

Dogs adored you, and to me, that's the best character reference of all.

Happy birthday, Dad! We know heaven is much sweeter because you're there, but we surely miss you down here. We will see you again one day.

CELEBRATING THE FOURTH

I hope you had a wonderful July 4 on Monday! We did. It also happened to be my husband Clark's birthday, so we celebrated that as well. Here are a few photos of our day:

We had a wonderful day. They came early afternoon, we had a traditional cookout, cake, and fellowship, then fireworks in our town that evening. Our town uses our church parking lot to set off fireworks (since it is on Main Street in the center of town), so the church provided fun activities for families that evening as well: bouncy houses, food trucks, train rides, etc. Since we can see the fireworks from our house, Clark and I opted to stay home and watch them (it was so hot still, and I cannot handle the heat OR the mosquitoes). The kids had such a wonderful time at the celebration.

They brought our doxie granddawg Shadow with them, so during the fireworks (which could easily be heard from our house), both dogs barked incessantly--my least favorite part of the day, of course. Any dog lover knows that dogs can't help barking at loud noises.

Shadow and Duke, our barkers

Clark had a great birthday, and we enjoyed honoring him, the patriarch of our family! The only thing missing was Kurt and Bethany, who are currently on their RV trip and are in Denver. We'll see them this fall.

We are in the peak of summer here in Georgia, with the humidity that goes along with it. The weather has been beautiful, though!

Until next time . . .

TODAY IS SHADOW'S BIRTHDAY!

With Mama Holly

Today is my granddawg Shadow's 15th birthday! As a black-and-tan mini dachshund, he's done a lot of living in his life: he's been the older brother to three human siblings and now three kitty brothers!

Kitty brothers Piper and Aslan

As most know, he's the inspiration for THE DACHSHUND ESCAPADES series, as the books are written from the dachshund's viewpoint and my family members are the characters in Sarge's stories.
Shadow as a pup

I originally began the series as THE SHADOW ADVENTURES, using Shadow's name, but years ago a gentleman threatened my then publisher with a copyright infringement for using the series title. Seems he was planning a TV series entitled THE ADVENTURES OF SHADOW. The publisher didn't need that kind of lawsuit, so we changed the dog's name and the series name to Sarge and THE DACHSHUND ESCAPADES: that's why you might see I AM SHADOW, ONE DOG'S STORY of THE SHADOW ADVENTURES still out there in cyberspace, although it has been out of print for some time now.

Our own doxie Duke is good buddies with Shadow, and although Duke is larger, stronger, and younger than Shadow, he still defers to Shadow when there is a question of whose toy it is. Shadow's philosophy is "no matter whose toy it is, all toys are MINE." Period.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, SHADOW! He might be elderly now, but he's still got some life in him, especially regarding food--a true chow hound extraordinaire.

Dachshunds . . . you gotta love 'em.

DUKE'S EIGHTH BIRTHDAY!!!

"Are you going to share that with me?"

Yes, today is our doxie Duke's 8th birthday!  Thing is, he still thinks he's a puppy most of the time:  he loves to kill his toys (a dachshund trait), bark loudly, give doggie kisses, play tug-of-war, having running fits, act comical, and tease.

"I don't want to get up yet!"

He's quite a dawg, and has brought so much love and laughter to our family.  The grandchildren, especially our five-year-old grandson, love him--and he loves them, too.  He's good buddies with them.

I've never known a dog with as much personality as Duke--he's positively human at times, and can also tell time.  YES HE CAN.  He somehow knows when it is time for any meal, or at least, when HE thinks it is time.  He stares at me to go into the kitchen and cook, and if I don't do it pretty soon, he resorts to telling me by barking at me.

In any case, we love him to pieces, and he's our fur baby.  As I type, he and Clark and playing tug-of-war--and that dawg is strong.

Dachshunds . . . you gotta love 'em.

"Canada geese, outa my yard!

"Boy, that food looks good!"

"Who are those children in the photo?"

"Boo!  Did I scare you?"

"This driving thing isn't that hard"

"Don't you like my new hairdo?"

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, ANNIKA!

Today happens to be our granddaughter Annika's 11th birthday!  That is so hard to believe that she is 11 years old already!

She's grown into a beautiful young lady, and is charming, funny, silly, sweet, and helpful, all rolled into one lump of sugar.  She loves to help in the kitchen, an excellent trait!  She and I always have so much fun being silly together, and as our first grandchild, she of course holds a special place in this grandma's heart.

I love the other two just as much, but today is ANNIKA'S
birthday.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, SWEETIE!  So blessed to have you as our granddaughter.

HAPPY DOXIE BIRTHDAY TO DUKE!

Yes, our beloved doxie Duke is seven years old today.  These years with him have been a roller coaster ride of laughs, fun, love, and joy.  He came to us as a scared little eight-week-old puppy, but
that didn't last long.  In a few days, he felt right at home and his antics have given us many laughs.

Super Dawg
I had told my hubby:  "I want a dog with personality," and boy, did we get it!  Yes, he's a tad stubborn, but that's a noted doxie trait.  If we tell him to get up on the couch and lie down, he makes a beeline for the blue chair across the room in front of a window!  But he does lie down in the blue chair, so I suppose that's obedience--well, partial obedience, anyway.

He loves tug-of-war, too.  For only an eighteen-pound dawg, he's very strong, so the game exercises any human arm that plays it with him.

"What?  I thought you said TREAT"
After my recent surgeries, he made it his priority to stay by my side and take care of me.  I had trouble getting up from my recliner when I first came home from the hospital, so Clark would take my hands and pull me up.  Of course, my knee hurt, so I probably groaned and had a pained expression.  Duke promptly got between Clark and me, whining and barking at him--Duke thought Clark was hurting me, when it was only the process of getting up that hurt me.  We reassured him that I was okay, so he's never intervened again when Clark has helped me up.

His vocabulary is large, too.  By "vocabulary" I mean the words that he understands:  food, hungry, eat, breakfast, lunch, dinner, cheese, eggs and bacon, treat, toy,
ball, bone, squeak toy, sock, lie down, bath, go out, car, ride, mailman, cat, kitty, squirrel, geese, Mama, Daddy, and all the names of everyone else in the family, especially those of the grandchildren.  Notice a pattern of all the food-related words?

Of course, as most dogs do, he is overjoyed when we come home from anywhere.  Lately, it's been to my physical therapy sessions, which last about two hours.  Clark drives me because my recent knee replacement was on my right leg--not up to driving yet.  Duke wags his tail and smiles, giving us doggie kisses and being thrilled to see us.

He made his debut in THE DACHSHUND ESCAPADES series in Book 2, I AM DACHSHUND.  Sarge takes Duke under his wing (or paw, to be exact) to teach Duke how dachshunds should act, as well as some of his own time-tested methods for obtaining human food.

All in all, I can't imagine how boring our lives were before he came.  Our children were married and lived out of town (well, one of them is only an hour away now), so the house was very quiet.  Duke has livened it up considerably, still wanting to chase his ball after we throw it down the hall for him.
"Why should I get off your bed??"

In fact, we've talked about his remarkable talent for remaining puppy-like in middle age (in dog years, that is).  He has a gray hair here and there now, too.  But his fun-loving and comical personality from puppyhood is still intact.  He makes us laugh every day, and he gives us that unconditional love that only a dog can give--down here, anyway.

Dachshunds . . . you gotta love 'em.  And in our case, we love Duke for the handsome, sweet, stubborn, intelligent, comical, loyal, and yes--the downright human--dawg he is!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY: THE NEWEST TEENAGER IN OUR FAMILY!

Yes, people, today is our doxie granddawg Shadow's 13th birthday!  As the "elder statesman" of the animals in our family, we salute him and wish him a fabulous birthday.  His compadres include Duke and five grandkitties:  Tate, Joey, Winston, Aslan, and Piper, all of which also wish him a happy birthday, I am sure!

Here they are:

Tate, aka "Fuzz Ball" - in AZ
with Kurt & Bethany

Joey, aka "Mr. Slick" - also in AZ

Piper, sweet Norwegian Forest cat "brother"
Aslan, friendly Flame point Siamese "brother"
who both live with Shadow's family

Winston, newest family member recently
adopted by Kurt & Bethany

And last, but certainly not least, our Duke

If your family is anything like ours, we love our fur children and want to take care of them.  Why even have animals if we don't?  They add so much joy to our lives!

Shadow outdates even the grandchildren, being the first "grandchild" in our family.  And the grandchildren look upon him as a family member as well.  We wouldn't have it any other way!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, SHADOW DAWG!
