DOXIE GRANDDAWG SHADOW IS SLEEPY!

Our doxie granddawg Shadow is 14 1/2 years old, so he's entitled to taking naps whenever he wants, right?

In the photo below, it was about 11:30 last night, so of course he was a bit sleepy.  We all laughed at this photo, dubbing it his "bat impression."

He's my inspiration for THE DACHSHUND ESCAPADES, and those photos on the covers of the books are of him, our rock star doxie!

NOTE:  The bold text in red are Sarge the doxie's thoughts

From Chapter 6 - Tate and Joey, a.k.a. The Fuzz Brothers

Tate, "Fuzz Ball"
Joey, "Mr. Slick"
Tate was in fact swiping at my ear, watching it flap back and forth. Hey, Fuzz Ball, leave the ears alone—they’re sensitive, and I’m kinda partial to ’em. He had a playful glint in his eye, so I returned the favor by lightly nipping on one of his front paws. Taken by surprise, he squeaked out a meow and fell back against Bethany’s arm, blinking those big kitty eyes. I know—you simply cannot believe that I would do such a thing, right? Since they want us to be buddies, we might as well start now!

I gave a sociable bark, and Bethany put Tate and me down on the floor. We just stared at each other for a while, although I did display my best doggie smile, wag my tail, and make some friendly moves toward him.  He is pretty small and just a baby, so I won’t hurt him—unless, of course, he gets too rambunctious—then I’ll have to show him who’s boss.

“Oh, I hope they don’t get into a fight,” said Bethany. “Look how Sarge is jumping at him—but Tate’s just standing there and staring!”

“I think Tate is just sizing up the dawg,” said Kurt. “And Sarge is wagging his tail, so that’s a good sign. I don’t  think Tate really knows what to make of him, so he’s evaluating what Sarge is actually up to.”

If you are just gonna stand there and stare, I believe I’ll go over to the sliding glass doors and see what’s outside. Maybe I can get a glimpse of those geese Aunt Bethany was telling me about. I whirled around to trot over to the doors when I heard a “Meeeoowww!” just as that pesky cat had the nerve to jump onto my back!

I CHANGED MY MIND: I AM DACHSHUND COVER REVEAL

The other day I revealed the cover for I AM DACHSHUND.  However, as you can see the cover above, I'VE CHANGED MY MIND on the main photo for it, and added a couple of dog paw prints.

I'm allowed to do that, right?  This cover version is better, more colorful, and I like it.  Hope you do!

TODAY IS DOXIE PUPPY DAY!

I love dachshunds of all ages, but there's just a special place in my heart for doxie PUPPIES!  The innocence in those little faces, the way they run, their curiosity, those cute little barks--I love everything about them.  Therefore, I proclaim today as DOXIE PUPPY DAY on this blog--dachshunds one year old or younger.

We adopted Duke at eight weeks of age, so here are some of his baby pictures--Duke is introduced in I AM DACHSHUND, Book 2 of THE DACHSHUND ESCAPADES:

"Are you gonna take me home?"

A scared little puppy going home

"I own the place now!"

And, here are some other lovable doxie puppies:

"We iz cute!"

"Where is Mama?  Is she coming back?"

The innocence of sleep

"What is this green stuff I'm sitting on?"

"No!  I don't believe it"

"Sunbathing is healthy"

Precious mama and baby

"Don't bother me--I'm thinking"

"Geez--I'm about to trip over these ears"

A trio of cuteness

"C'mon--you know you want to give me that treat"

Sardines!

"Say what??"

Basketful of love

Dreamland

"I--can--do--it"

"I am sooooo tired"

Dachshunds . . . you gotta love em--no matter what age they are!

DUKE THE DOXIE SPEAKS

Hello doxie lovers,

This is Duke, Mavis Duke Hinton's dachshund.

If you have read I AM DACHSHUND, I am introduced in that book, the second one of THE DACHSHUND ESCAPADES series.

I am writing on her behalf to let you know that she is still recuperating from her second knee replacement surgery--but she asked me to tell you that she'll be back soon, blogging away!

From my observation (and doxies are master observers, you know), she is getting along so much better than she did with her first knee surgery.  Why, she was able to do things for herself when she first came home, unlike the first time, when my human daddy Clark had to help her up from her recliner, etc.  And this time, her leg is hardly swollen at all!  Oh, if I forget and jump up on her lap on the right side, she lets me know right away to move away from her sore leg.  But I caught on pretty fast and don't do that anymore.

I like to stay close by her, though.  I want to do everything I can to help her get well so she will feel like playing with me again!  Daddy does sometimes, but all humans know that there's just nobody like mama, be they human or canine.

She got her 51 staples out on Monday, and I heard her tell Daddy that they did hurt somewhat, but she was glad to have them gone because they pulled sometimes.

She asked me to tell everyone that she'll be back soon, and to please check this blog for updates.  Don't forget to stop by now and then!

Until then, just remember that she is making good progress and is able to walk very well, but not very far yet, because she gets too tired.  She has already started outpatient therapy three days a week, and that will help her build up her stamina.

Thanks for reading this from me, and she'll be back soon!

Duke

FIVE-STAR REVIEW

I'd like to share this five-star review of I AM DACHSHUND on Christianbook.com:

"I have two dachshunds and this book had a lot of my own dachshunds' personalities; reading this was a joy! I sometimes thought, 'My dogs do that!' and I had to laugh a lot reading this book.

"If you own a dachshund, get this book. It is written in true dachshund form, or if you love dogs, it a fun book to read."

I want to thank the nameless reader who wrote the review.  I know it's zany to "think like a dachshund," but I'm so glad that some think I've nailed it :).  Get your copy today.

I AM DACHSHUND

Book 2 of THE DACHSHUND ESCAPADES series, I AM DACHSHUND is listed for $15.26 (paperback) and $4.99 (Kindle) on Amazon today!  Click on the link below for further information:

http://www.amazon.com/Am-Dachshund-Mavis-Duke-Hinton/dp/1602902593/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1396969436&sr=1-1&keywords=i+am+dachshund

Sometimes a dog has to put up with a little silliness from humans.

"People have strange notions and do some of the craziest things, but I don't mind them. I get all the attention I want from Mama, Papa, who's a pastor, and my sweet little baby sister, Annika, who loves my kisses.

"But there's one thing lacking . . . people food. I love people food. After you've had it, that dried-up dog food tastes like cardboard. That's why I count on my absolute favorite person in the world, Papa, who calls me his "Granddawg," and his best friend, Sellars. They've been known to slip me the good stuff now and then, when Mama and Grandma aren't looking.

"Most dogs just lie around, passively accepting what comes their way, watching the world go by. That sounds suspiciously like a cat to me. I want the world to know I AM DACHSHUND--the guardian, the sentinel, the keeper of everything my family holds dear . . . ."

Fall in love with Sarge, the quintessential dachshund, and laugh along with his foibles and humorous escapades.

WHAT'S UP WITH DACHSHUNDS AND BEDS?

The cartoon pretty much sums it up.  Shadow, our granddawg (known as Sarge in THE DACHSHUND ESCAPADES) "wrote" the following excerpt from I AM DACHSHUND, Book 2.

"The Defiant Paw"

Kurt had brought in the air mattress, and with its accompanying electric pump, he had it ready for linens in no time.  Mama and Bethany were preparing to put sheets on the bed when I saw my chance and jumped right into the middle of that comfy air mattress.  "Sarge, get down, boy!  We're trying to make the bed!"  But I like this big, comfy bed, and I want to sleep on it.  So I turned over on my back and just lay there, looking up at Mama.

"Sarge, we said this ISN'T your bed, so get down, boy!"  Mama shoved me off again.  Since they wouldn't let me back up on that bed, I believed I should demonstrate how I felt about this bed.  So I sat down beside the mattress and took my paw and placed it on the edge of the mattress.

Daddy started laughing.  "Look at that 'defiant paw' on that mattress!  Sarge is like a strong-willed child with his own way of communicating his feelings to us, isn't he?"

Mama came over to me and picked me up.  "Sarge, you really can't help it:  dachshunds are noted for being stubborn, and although you ARE a good boy, you are one determined little doggie when it comes to something you want.  You are so funny sometimes!"

Well, Mama, a dawg has to stick up for himself, you know.  People are kinda slow to pick up on things sometimes, and even you don't always figure out what I'm trying to say--but you got it right this time.

As everyone headed off to bed, they continued laughing over my "defiant paw."  I didn't mean to be defiant; I merely meant to make perfectly clear what I wanted, even though I ended up not getting my way, as usual.  I did, however, enjoy my new doggie bed that Papa gave me for Christmas, the next best thing, which Mama placed beside the fireplace for me.

I nearly got myself into trouble this time by being persistent, but it worth a try, and at least I got my point across to them.  We dogs never know how people are going to react, but a smart dog has to take chances now and then.

SHADOW THE DOXIE ANSWERS READERS' QUESTIONS

We recently interviewed the precocious dachshund author of I AM SARGE* and I AM DACHSHUND. We promised our readers that we would bring him back to answer some of their questions, so we are pleased to have him as our guest again today.

MDH: You have recently visited several dachshund rescue societies in various parts of the country. Would you like to share a little about those with our readers?

SHADOW THE DOXIE: First of all, thank you for having me back. I never miss an opportunity to promote my books! My main thrust in visiting the dachshund rescue societies was to commend the staff for work well done. My doxie buddies, I've found, don't have much interest in books--seems they mostly seek treats--so I focused on putting paw prints on copies of my book for the workers. They are special people, and it is wonderful how they help my fellow wiener dogs find a new lease on life in loving homes.

MDH: Well, then . . . what did you find to be the most fascinating detail about these rescue societies?

SHADOW THE DOXIE: As a dog myself, the most fascinating detail for ME in the societies was the dedication of the workers. Dachshunds of all colors, coats, ages, personalities, and health are accepted and loved. It is wonderful to see humans being so accepting of them. If humans want to adopt a dachshund, they should check out the rescue societies first.

MDH: Thank you for giving us insight on that. Now, let's get to our first reader question. This one comes from a dachshund owner named Patrick in Toledo, Ohio, who asks: "You have said that Papa Duke was your favorite character in your books. Since he is no longer on the scene, do you plan on having another favorite in the third book, DACHSHUNDS FOREVER?"
