DACHSHUNDS = LOVE
All kinds of animals can be friends. I've seen dogs and ducks, dogs and elephants, as well as dogs and lions together. See the common denominator here? D-O-G-S! Not only are they man's best friend, but dogs are best friends to a lot of other animals, too.
I believe I can tell if a dog is friendly by just looking into his eyes. Much of a dog's aggression comes from fear or abuse. If one can get through that self-protective shell, then the true, sweet dog is underneath.

DACHSHUNDS: CHOW HOUNDS EXTRAORDINAIRE
Dachshunds, as we all know, love human food. They can hear a cheese wrapper from 50 yards; they can smell food cooking when they are at the other end of the yard; and they awaken from a dead sleep if we are trying to sneak a snack of peanuts!
For your viewing pleasure, here are some very typical dachshund photos to which I've added appropriate captions:

"Look into my eyes . . . give me a treat!" |
"I'm ready--throw me that cookie!" |
"See how cute I am? Don't you think I'm cute enough to help you eat that cupcake?" |

A DACHSHUND'S LIFE STRUGGLE
I know this is very true with our own doxie Duke! He has a time staying in my lap unless I am in my recliner with my feet up. He's longer than most doxies I've seen, which is fine, but not so good when he's trying to find comfort in a human lap.
He tends to slide down unless he is held, and that gets tiresome. Fortunately, our couch reclines as well, so there's plenty of safe laps for him to flop down on.

LIVING THROUGH THE CRUD!
If anyone out there has wondered where I've been this week, here's the scoop: I've been trying to live through the cold, a.k.a. crud, since Monday! Oh, it's been awful. I awoke Monday to a scratchy throat, and it went downhill from there.
Slight fever, sore throat, sinus headache, runny nose, watery, swollen eyes (I looked like I was crying for three solid days)!! Have been taking a decongestant, Tylenol, nasal spray, chicken soup, orange juice, and pain meds. I wanted to stay as comfortable as I possibly could, because colds really get the best of me.
After thinking about it, I haven't had a cold in about three years! That's amazing, for me especially. When I taught in the classroom, it seemed like I was either coming down with a cold or surviving one very often. Of course, it didn't help that sick students would sneeze in my face or hack over me. No wonder I had colds so often then!
In any case, I do believe I'll live through this one and hope to have a productive coming week. My hubby AND my doxie Duke have treated me very well. Clark has cooked for me, cleaned up the kitchen afterwards, done laundry, and waited on me. Duke has stayed by my side, giving me long, imploring looks like he was saying, "Don't worry, Mama. I'm here and I'll take care of you." Then he'd give me a doggie kiss on my hand or cheek. Can't have better care than these two.

STAR WARS: GRANDSON'S SIXTH BIRTHDAY PARTY
It's hard to believe that Asher turned six on Saturday! His mom (our daughter Holly) had a Star Wars themed birthday party for him, which was perfect. He, like most young boys, LOVES anything to do with Star Wars. In fact, his bedroom is a Star Wars pad. But I digress.
Clark and I were privileged to attend his party, and we enjoyed seeing all the decorations and cute things Holly used for the decorations and food. She also made the cake and decorated it herself!
Without further ado, here are photos of the big event:
Beautiful cake--he wanted buttercream frosting instead of fondant |
Birthday boy as we all sang "Happy Birthday" |
Blowing out the candles |
Food table |
Large pretzel sticks dipped in colored white chocolate |
Self explanatory! |
Large marshmallows decorated with edible ink |
Opening his gifts |
A few of his friends--there were four tables of them! |
The games consisted of a search outside for the Luke Skywalker toy; playing with light sabers; "Bingo" with Star Wars figures on the cards instead of numbers--winners received a prize for each game.
At the close of the party, the children enjoyed the playground next door. It was a great party, and the children enjoyed it very much. Family is everything!!

AH, THOSE DACHSHUNDS
What a sweet doxie family! And the puppy is adorable . . .
As you probably know, I'm kinda partial to the black and tans with a smooth coat since my Duke as well as my granddawg Shadow are both such. I do think all the other doxies are beautiful too, of course.

SO MANY DOXIES--SO MANY CHOICES
What is your favorite kind of doxie? I mean, you can choose from standard size or mini size (up to 11 pounds), coat type (smooth, longhaired, or wirehaired), and oh, the colors! There are now gray, cream, piebald, dapple, speckled, red, brown, black, blue, black-and tan, chocolate, and some mixtures in between.
Of course, both my doxie and my granddawg are black and tan, smooth coat; we find that the smooth coat is so easy to maintain. I will admit that the longhaired reds are gorgeous! And the wirehaired look like lil' ol' grandpas to me.
Whatever the type, they're all doxies at heart, with all those traits we've come to know and love so well: lovable, sweet, comical, foodie, playful, sleep masters, and of course, stubborn. I love even that one.
Dachshunds . . . you gotta love 'em, no matter what.
