BEST AND WORST DOXIE TRAITS

What is your favorite dachshund trait, and what is your least favorite? I have thought about this quite a bit, and have finally decided. Here are some dachshund traits, favorite and least favorite:

Favorite Dachshund Traits/Behaviors

Which is your favorite/least favorite trait of a doxie? After much thought, my dachshund Duke is quite a dawg, and my favorite trait of his is (ta da!) . . . do I have to name only one?? He's loving, a cuddle bug, comical, playful, intelligent, comforting when one of us is sick or sad . . . HE'S WONDERFUL!

My LEAST favorite trait of Duke's is . . . EXCESSIVE BARKING! He'll bark at a speck of dust floating by--a car on our street--opening/closing of a drawer--to get me to cook dinner, etc.

He is also stubborn, but he's still so comical he makes me laugh every single day.

Fortunately, he isn't a digger, he's stubbornly housebroken (he won't shut up until someone lets him out--even in the rain), he doesn't chew on important things (except the occasional Kleenex).

What about your doxie?

DO YOU "KNOW" YOUR DOXIE?

I would make 100% if this had been a test on doxie behavior and appearance.  You probably would too, if you own and/or love dachshunds.

Duke, exhibit #1, can hear me open a cheese rapper from the other end of the house, for heaven's sake.

He has a myriad of facial expressions, and I love 'em all.

He definitely knows how to tunnel under his blankie, my recliner throw, and of course, the bedsheets when he manages to get into anyone's bed!
"Don't wake me . . . this is heavenly."

Dachshunds . . . you gotta love 'em!

THEN AND NOW . . .

Duke, as anyone who visits this blog knows, is quite a dawg.  Someone asked me the other day how old he was, and was quite surprised when I replied that he is six.  The friend commented that Duke still looks and acts like a happy puppy!

We tend to agree, because he IS a wonderful pet.  He's definitely a "people dog" - and he just won't stay in a room by himself, either.  He still loves to play, whether it is a game of tug of war (and I usually lose because that dawg is strong!), or fetch (but he still doesn't want to give me his toy--he likes to drop it about an inch out of my reach, and grabs it just before I can reach it!).  If I am in the home office, he comes in there and relaxes while I am on the computer; if in the living room, he relaxes on the couch; and most of all, if we are in the kitchen, THAT is his favorite room in the house and he immediately trots in there, hoping for a morsel of people food.

I always say that he is 200% doxie, too.  He has all of the breed's best traits (loving, comical, loyal, intelligent, playful), as well as a couple of those that humans don't seem to enjoy (stubbornness, loud bark).  We don't care, however.  He's quite a force to be reckoned with, you know!

DACHSHUND IN A NUTSHELL . . .

This item below states exactly how I feel about my beloved dachshund breed!  Loyalty, faithfulness, loving . . . sense of humor was not included, but perhaps all doxies aren't as comical as our Duke--and he's a wonderful pet.  Duke enjoys life, and he makes all his humans do that as well.

In a word, he's just plain FUN.

MY WINDOWS AREN'T DIRTY . . .

Duke and Shadow sunning themselves
Yes, our doxie Duke loves to look out the large windows of our sunroom to see what's going on in the backyard.  The windows are 72 inches high and less than a foot from the floor, so even with his short legs, he can prop his front paws on the windowsill and get a good view.

My husband keeps bird feeders full back there, so we see a myriad of birds, as well as chipmunks, squirrels, and I've even seen a rat (yes, a rat) partaking of birdseed which fell on the ground.  It's really interesting watching the critters sharing food together, mostly ignoring each other, unless a furry creature happens to get in the way of another.

But I digress.  Duke's nose art decorates most of the twelve windows out there as he barks his comments to those creatures eating down below.

IF IT'S NOT A DACHSHUND . . .

I think most dachshund lovers/owners feel just this way . . . I certainly do. Although I love most dogs, there's just something about our doxies, right? Perhaps it's their innate ability to be comical (and they'll really ham it up if you laugh at them). Or maybe it's their multiple facial expressions--whatever that doxie essence is, this breed is a fabulous dog, a furry friend, and wonderful companion.

ATLAS OF THE DACHSHUND BRAIN

My dachshund Duke definitely exemplifies ALL of the traits listed below, except chewing up inappropriate things--he doesn't do that very much at all, nor does he tend to throw up often.  He makes up for those by having a double dose of the other traits, however!

What about your doxie?  Leave a comment to share something interesting about your dachshund, a.k.a. chow hound extraordinaire.
