DACHSHUNDS LEAD BUSY LIVES--MOST OF THE TIME

I remember when I took my doxie Duke to his first vet appointment when he was less than three months old. I told the vet, "I think I'm too old for a puppy--he wears me out!" The vet reassured me that Duke would slow down, and by the time he was a year old, he'd be more manageable. I'm still waiting, and he's nine now!!

Seriously, he HAS slowed down, but up until about a year ago, Duke thought he was still a puppy. He still likes to play chase, fetch, tug-of-war, etc., but afterwards likes a nap. Just yesterday, I took a break from my computer (I'm formatting my next project, a boxed set of THE DACHSHUND ESCAPADES books) and played with him. He doesn't like to be ignored when he isn't relaxing--kinda like having a toddler in the house.

Duke is a great companion and playmate, and if Clark or I happen to be unwell, he stays right beside whoever is sick until we feel better. I would say that dachshunds are an active breed, but not overly so. That's good, because I can't keep up with hyper dog breeds. He's just right for us. I've also found that Duke has two speeds: "wide open" and "off."

DACHSHUNDS LOVE CHEWING

my squeak toys tucked inside--it's like a whole new toy!"

Does your doxie like to chew, dig, lick--or all three? I would say that my doxie Duke's preference is licking. When the grands come for a visit, he wants to lick them just about ALL the time. I know they're sweet, but really, Duke!

Of course, all dachshunds prefer FOOD, but I would say Duke's second favorite thing is chewing. Oh, he never chews on anything he's not supposed to, thankfully, but when we buy him those little flannel doggie blankets, he chews them to the point that we call them his Swiss cheese blankets because of all the holes! When there's only enough left to merely hold the holes together, we toss it and get a new one. We've even resorted to getting a fairly large piece of flannel and dividing it into two-foot squares, giving him only one piece until it is destroyed. Honestly, I believe it's his "Linus blanket" (remember Linus from the Peanuts comic strip and cartoons?).

Duke never digs in the yard, but I know people whose dog thinks he's in prison and has to dig escape tunnels! Flower beds or gardens mean nothing to dogs bent on digging, and many a human has gotten very angry when prize rose bushes were dug up!!

In any case, we can handle the chewing of the cheap blankets. What about you?

LABOR DAY CHOW HOUNDS

Our family had a Labor Day cookout yesterday. We had lots of fun, but I thought the photo above was the best one of all: our doxie Duke and our doxie granddawg Shadow hovered around the grill while my hubby Clark watched the burgers, hot dogs, and chicken. They HAD to be on hand, of course, in case he dropped anything--to keep the yard clean, right?
