The very first doxie my family ever owned was a red standard named Elia. We were living in Bremerhaven, Germany, and I was ten. She was truly a playmate: she'd let me put doll clothes on her and would lie down on her back in my doll carriage so I could take her for a stroll around the neighborhood.
