PLAYTIME? AND HAPPY LABOR DAY

This doxie puppy and kitty seem to be playing . . . or not.  You be the judge.

After watching Duke play with Piper the cat for one solid year, I tend to think these two are, in fact, playing!

IT'S A FAMILY THING

Our granddaughter Annika wasn't feeling well after dinner last night, so our doxie granddawg Shadow and grandkitty Thor jumped up on the couch to keep her company.  The stuffed animals were provided by her sweet little brother, hoping to make her feel better.

That's what families do, be they human or animal.  Our beloved pets--in this case, a dachshund and a kitty--seem to know when we don't feel well and just want to help us feel better.  Don't you love that about them?

OIL PAINTINGS OF DACHSHUNDS

Lately, I've gotten on this kick of searching for oil paintings of our favorite dawg, the doxie.  I've found some really beautiful paintings--even one of Mona Lisa holding a dachshund.  Somehow I don't think Leonardo da Vinci would mind :).

DACHSHUNDS "UNDER COVER"

Here is a photo of our granddawg Shadow . . . if you own a doxie, you'll understand the photo completely!

I've seen Duke our doxie in similar poses over the years.  I suppose that since dachshunds are so long, if they manage to get their front half under the covers, then they think they've accomplished something!

SAY CHEESE!

And boy, this doxie really laid it on, didn't he??

PALS

I can add no words to the story of this photo, so I won't even try.  This is one of those rare instances where a picture truly is worth a thousand words!

LET'S HEAR IT FOR LONG-HAIRED DACHSHUNDS!

Aren't these doxies beautiful?  Although I am partial to the smooth coat for its ease in grooming, these doxies are sweeties and come in lots of colors.

ALWAYS . . .

Nobody likes to think about the time when we must say good-be to our beloved pets.  And, nearly all of us have had to do so at one time or another in our lives.  Duke turned seven in June, and he's beginning to get gray on his muzzle and paws where the tan fur is.  He's still plenty spunky and active, but those gray hairs are just a reminder that his days are numbered, just as mine (and yours) are.

Unfortunately, we sometimes have no chance to say good-bye to a beloved pet if an accident happens or an illness claims him/her suddenly.  That is all the more reason to cherish each day with them.

I am not getting morbid, but realistic.  Pets add so much to our lives.  Duke has so much personality that we just don't know what he'll do next!  He is at once loving, kind, sweet, cute, comical, maddening, annoying, and lazy.  But we wouldn't trade him for the world, because he is so intelligent and loyal as well.  And he makes me laugh at least once every day!

Pets instinctively know when we don't feel well or are upset about something.  Duke does his best to comfort me when I am in pain or sad.  Those eyes look into mine, and I can see love and concern in them.  Oh, I don't care what veterinarians or researchers say--I know dogs can love me back!

Duke is our fur child, and the grandchildren love him as much as we do.  Every time our four-year-old grandson comes, he and Duke are good buddies.  They chase each other, one giggling
and the other barking (and you can guess which is which), until both are tired and retire to the couch to relax together.  Asher often says wistfully, "I wish Dukie was my doggie.  He loves me a lot."

VEGETATING

Dachshunds are noted for being a comical breed, and although owners and photographers often pose them in various ways, doxies can be downright hilarious on their own.

The doxie in the photo looks like he's been there awhile, and I don't think someone placed him in that box, do you?  He really seems to be enjoying himself!

SALVADOR DALI AND DACHSHUNDS

I always admired Salvador Dali's art, especially his "melted" clocks in "The Persistence of Memory":

DO YOUR DACHSHUNDS HOG THE FURNITURE, TOO?

We have only one dachshund, Duke.  He has his favorite spots to lie or sit on, too.  If one of us "gets" his spot, he lies in wait until we get up, and he makes a beeline for it.  I can't imagine what it would be like around here if we had three or four doxies--it would probably look like the cartoon above.
